Showdown at the OK Corral

Saturday, January 7, 2012
Tombstone, AZ

Well, we have had another detour.  Realized we were passing by Tombstone, AZ so just had to make the 20 mile detour to see Boot Hill and the rest of it.  Yes, we will be hanging out in another graveyard today.  There is a trend starting here.  Don't think I like it.

These are three cowboys killed at OK Corral gunfight by Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and his buddies.

This place was obviously refurbished but still quite interesting.

Then off to the Birdcage Theatre, Brothel, Saloon, Opera house.  The wickedest saloon/brothel in the west  It was open for 9 years, 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year.

Now I am standing in the middle of the Birdcage Saloon/Theatre/Brothel.  The main floor is open with a stage on one end.  All around the walls are suspended "cribs" or "birdcages" about 12 feet in the air.  These were the birdcages where the whores worked.  The cages were 4' x 8'.  The guys would view the girls if the curtains were open.  Pick one of the "birds", pay his money and then go on up.  In the basement were card tables another bar and two high-end rooms for the expensive whores.  This building was the only original building left in Tombstone.  They had a big fire which wiped out the rest of the town in the 1800's.  Evidently the men worked very hard to make sure the Birdcage was not burnt down.  Had to save their source of entertainment.

This is the re-enactment of the gunfight at the OK corral.  Fun to watch, although they moved the gunfight down the street as they did their reenactment.  When they were about ready to shoot they went through a gate into an enclosed area behind a building so the crowd had to pay in order to watch the actual gun battle.  We didn't see the ending but we are pretty sure how it turned out.
